RESCUE BY DESIGN
Partnership Parameters
Rescue By Design is the flagship coalition initiative of Rescue Dog Productions, the studio responsible for its strategy, stewardship, and development.
It is built as a coalition of aligned brands creating new ways to make rescue dogs visible, desirable, and chosen.
Its structure is designed to balance creative freedom for participating brands with shared standards that protect the integrity of the coalition and the equity of every member within it.
Each participating brand should be able to make a unique contribution while remaining confident that the actions of other members strengthen—rather than diminish—the value of the collective.
This requires clarity, formality, and thoughtful stewardship.
Relationship Structure
Participation in Rescue By Design is by letter agreement between each partner brand and Rescue Dog Productions, typically structured as a one-year renewable commitment.
Each agreement reflects the specific aspirations, scale, and opportunities of the participating brand. The goal is not rigid uniformity, but a clear shared understanding of participation, representation, and the role of Rescue Dog Productions in maintaining coalition standards.
Either party may end participation, but the expectation is long-term alignment and the gradual building of a visible, trusted coalition.
Creative Freedom + Shared Standards
Coalition brands retain broad creative freedom across product categories, storytelling, imagery, and customer experience.
Rescue Dog Productions does not seek to micromanage creative decisions. Its role is to ensure that participating products and representations reflect the broader values of Rescue By Design:
— aspiration rather than charity
— beauty rather than loss
— delight, surprise, and emotional connection
— humane and cruelty-free values consistent with broader animal welfare.
Products may be playful, unexpected, or subversive, but should never undermine the dignity of rescue or the reputation of participating brands.
Rescue Dog Productions acts as steward of these standards, protecting both the mission and the mutual trust between coalition members. We expect that coalition members will be supportive citizens, and we expect that our role will be coaching, coordinating, promoting, and unifying, but we also promise our partners to act if any coalition partner degrades the mission or compromises any partner's brand equity.
Minimum Participation
Each participating brand commits to developing at least one dedicated Rescue By Design product, release, or initiative during the first year of participation.
This may take the form of:
— a new product
— an adaptation of an existing product
— a limited release
— a capsule collection
— or other product-driven initiative/
More participation is welcome, but one meaningful contribution establishes the minimum standard of coalition membership.
Visibility + Representation
Products developed through the initiative should be visibly represented as part of the Rescue By Design coalition.
This should include:
— Rescue By Design designation marks
— Hang tags with Rescue By Design messaging
It may additionally include:
— Packaging imagery and language
— Website and in-store presentation
— Launch storytelling
— Social, email, or community support.
We will work with coalition partners to create co-branding materials that reflect their brands, and merchandising and sales channels.
Customers should be led to understand that the product is part of a larger movement to elevate rescue and make it more visible in everyday life.
Creative Collaboration
Rescue Dog Productions is available not only as coalition manager, but as a creative thought partner.
We maintain a library of ideas for unexpected products and meaningful customer engagement around rescue, and bring experience in branding, product design, customer behavior, and cultural positioning.
Our goal is to help participating brands create products that feel both surprising and completely natural—objects that make customers think, “I didn’t expect this,” and simultaneously, “This makes perfect sense.”
Economic Structure
Participation includes an annual coalition fee paid to Rescue Dog Productions, scaled to the size of the partner, the scope of participation, and the degree of collaboration involved. Coalition fees are small and meant simply to document the commitment to participate.
Additionally, partners pay Rescue Dog Productions a royalty fee based on sales of Rescue By Design branded products.
The purpose of this structure is intentional. We do not position Rescue By Design as philanthropy attached to product, but as a disciplined business opportunity, with economics driven by success.
Participation should create genuine value for partner brands—strategically, culturally, and commercially. Concurrently, the success of Rescue By Design products should be the key resource driver for the Studio’s activities building, managing, and publicizing the Coalition.
The structure is meant to eschew nonprofit dynamics - e.g., seeking grants, building donor relationships, etc. - and to instead create a pure focus on economic success.
IP
Partner brands retain full IP control for their products and collaborations. Rescue by Design, trademarks and creative assets are used by partners under a simple license.
The Shared Objective
The long-term ambition is not a single successful collaboration, but a visible and expanding coalition where repeated presence makes rescue culturally familiar.
What is seen repeatedly becomes normal. What becomes normal can then become preferred, if represented compellingly.
The work is not to ask people to care more. It is to help them see differently.
That is how rescue moves from charity to aspiration.
